What to look for before joining a gym...
January is the busiest month for gyms across the country. It's the month when people who never have thought of going to a gym want to get a membership. As you are doing so, consider this checklist for selecting a gym.
Promotions: Gyms offer a lot of deals in January. Be aware the cheapest deals might be the ones that lock you into a long-term contract. It may not be obvious at first, but cost is not the No. 1 attraction for gym members. It is location. Most people want a gym that is close to their home or on their way to or from work. Rather than checking into promotion and feeling pressure to sign up before it ends, find out more about the facility and how convenient its location will be for you. That convenience may encourage you to use the gym regularly.
Fees: Find out what other costs are imposed upon you other than the monthly membership fee. There could be start-up fees, fees for lockers, pool usage, and group fitness classes. Pay special attention to a membership termination fee. If you think motivating yourself to join a gym is hard, try quitting it. Read all the fine print carefully for membership termination policy and don't end up signing a contract that forces a one-to three-year membership. Take the contract home, read it and make a list of your questions. Do this for a couple of gyms and compare the benefits. See which one gives you the best for your buck.
Tour of the facility: Ask for at least a week of a free trial and use it well to learn more about the facility. Visit the gym during the time you are most likely to use it and take your time to do so. Look carefully to see whether there are time limits on the machines at peak hours, rules enforced for towels, shoes and socks. Look around and try to get a feel for the place and people, variety of equipment and its upkeep.
Group fitness classes: It doesn't matter whether you think you will never be in a group fitness class, you should still find out what type of classes the gym offers. There will be a time when you will want to try something new and having a gym that offers classes is recommended. Establishing a well-rounded group fitness program with a variety of classes shows a gym's thoughtfulness in helping members reach their goals.
Gym personnel: Get a feel for the staff and the front desk and on the gym floor. Pay attention to smiles, hellos and goodbyes. See whether the staff is helping others or is the gym floor full of personal trainers using your workout time to persuade you to hire them. Ask if the group fitness instructors and personal trainers are certified and whether they have enough knowledge to help you.
Gyms should be a means to motivate you to exercise. If a gym can't provide you that stress-free environment, you need to look for one that will.
